Finding a therapist or psychologist in the Inland Empire

While California’s Inland Empire may be enormous, it also means that you have your pick of therapists or psychologists. Maybe you need a little support or you are looking for support for your child/teen. With such a large selection of therapists/psychologists, you may be wondering where do I start? I’d like to help you find someone who can help.

I want to help you get the support you need in the Inland Empire

To find a therapist or psychologist who is a good fit for you may start with asking yourself the following question, What am I hoping to gain? As a psychologist, I am always looking to support my clients and it is important for me to know if they have any expectations and/or goals for therapy. The easiest way to think about your therapy goals for yourself and/or your child/teen is to think about the outcome. I have phrased the following questions it in a solutions-focused way:

“If therapy helped, what would be different? How would you and/or your child/teen be different? Would you and/or your child/teen behave any differently? Would you and/or your child/teen interact and respond any differently? How might others notice this change?

Once you have thought about those questions, now is the time to focus on what you are looking for in a therapist or psychologist. I’m sure you are not surprised, but there are more questions to ponder.

  1. Are you looking for family therapy, such as a therapist that may see both with you and your child/teen? A family therapist may focus on communication issues or other relational factors of the parent-child dynamic, such as arguments and understanding the other’s perspective to name a few.

  1. Are you hoping to find someone that may support you in parenting your child/teen, who will meet with you individually? A therapist who offers parent support may help to understand your child’s current developmental level and/or behaviors, especially if your child/teen has had a recent diagnosis.

  1. Are you hoping to find someone that may support your child/teen and keep you in the loop when needed? A child therapist/psychologist will work with your child/teen individually on various diagnoses and issues. They will also check-in with parents as needed.

How to search for a therapist/psychologist

The best place to start your search is psychology today (www.psychologytoday.com). Here you can type your city and it will automatically populate therapists/psychologists in your area. Then you may narrow your search to include what issues you may need help with (e.g., anxiety, ADHD, Autism), and the age they specialize in (toddlers, children, teens, adults). Then read. Read their bios to see if anyone speaks to you and your needs. If they have a website then take the extra time to browse through it. This may help you refine your search even further. The last step is to call. I recommend reaching out and speaking to at least three different professionals in your area.
